St Elijah Carmelite Community @ SPPIntroductionThis community was
started in 1998 when the late Archbishop Gregory Yong, allowed the
Carmelites to administer the Parish of Saints Peter and Paul. Carmelite life is an on-going reminder of the gift offered to
everyone. This is the gift
of the incarnation of Christ. The
St Elijah Carmelite Community has the privilege of being a reminder to
everyone connected to the Parish of Sts Peter and Paul of the gift that
offers all an experience of the highest transcendence in the
ordinariness of life. Members of the CommunityAt the recent
Provincial Chapter in May 2008, the new Prior of the Community is Fr
Joseph Koh, O.C.D. The
other members making up the community are Fr Thomas Lim,
O.C.D.(Provincial Delegate of Taiwan-Singapore Provincial Delegation);
Fr Anselm Phang, O.C.D. (Parish Priest of the Church of Sts. Peter and
Paul); Bro. Joseph Somkrit, O.C.D. (Procurator of Community); Deacon
Gregory Hon, O.C.D.; and Bro. Damian Tay, O.C.D.
This Community prays 5 times a day and offers a prayerful
presence in the heart of the city of Singapore and especially in SPP. Carmelite LifeCarmelite life is
an on-going proclamation to humanity that in Christ, she has good
reasons to be hopeful. As
Carmelites, we offer a mysticism that is committed to the real world and
practiced in daily life. Our
contacts with parishioners provide that vital link through which that
mysticism may be fleshed out in reality.
This mutual formation, so often unknown to many, raises the
spiritual life of the Carmelite and of the beloved parishioner.
This relationship is the essential conduit of hope in Christ. The St Elijah
Carmelite Community @ SPP desires to live a spiritual life which adopts
the city culture and expression into our ways and methods of prayer in
so far as these things become compatible with our Christian identity and
our Carmelite charism becomes intelligible to others. Parish LifeThe Carmelite
presence ensures the parish retain the holistic approach to the Holy
Trinity and to the myriad of ways God grace us.
If there is a devotion; or a programme; or a process; that is of
benefit to the parishioners, then it would be considered for use in the
parish. ConclusionThe Carmelites live
in a globalised and interdependent world.
The art of staying relevant to the wellbeing of the region is
intimately bound up with the way the Carmelites live and teach others
how to live their lives. Carmel
will survive and be seen to be important if our lives and teaching are
authentic. Our lives must be rooted and cemented in an experience of the
living God who, having created us in His image and likeness, has
reserved a space in the interior of each person to place his mansion. May the presence of
the St Elijah Carmelite Community bring you peace and healing. Prayer of Blessing by CarmelitesLord, bless the
world Lord, bless this
place Let your Holy
Spirit fill me with mercy and grace Lord, fill my heart
with hope Lord, fill my mind
with faith Lord, fill my face
with joy Lord, fill my life
